Digital terrain modelling or DTM are used to create contours which describes the change in level on a terrain surface.
Lines are created from points with the same levels to describe the change in relief to even space in vertical plans creating the elevation of a terrain.
When creating a digital terrain model, ridges and valleys can be very easily detected on a topographic plan.
